This guide is a comprehensive reference to the Iowa Environmental Mesonet (IEM), a free public weather and climate data platform operated by Iowa State University that most weather enthusiasts have only begun to explore.
The IEM ingests data from dozens of observing networks, preserves records that in some cases extend back to the 1800s, and makes them available through hundreds of tools, download portals, and data services. Most regular users still rely on only a small fraction of what it offers. This guide maps the whole thing.
How to Use This Book
The chapters follow a logical progression from orientation to detailed reference, but each one is also designed to stand alone. Practical workflows are embedded directly in the chapters where the relevant tools are introduced, so that when you finish reading about a tool, you immediately see it applied to a real problem.
The back matter is designed as working reference material:
- The Glossary defines 39 IEM-specific terms used throughout the book
- Appendix A is a network quick reference table you will return to repeatedly
- Appendix B is a complete URL directory — 166 verified links organized by category
- Appendix C is the full Autoplot chart reference — all 260 charts across 10 categories

A Note on Data Quality
Throughout the book you will encounter callout boxes flagging data quality issues at the exact point where they are relevant. These are not buried in a later chapter; they appear when you first encounter the data they affect. Chapter 10 provides the full technical treatment; the callout boxes are the early warning signs.
