11 Chapter 11 — Getting the Most Out of IEM: Putting It All Together
The preceding chapters have covered the IEM from the outside in — what it is, how it is organized, what each section contains, and how to get data out of it. The practical workflows that demonstrate these tools in action have been embedded directly in the chapters where the relevant tools live:
- Workflow 1 — COOP Daily Extremes is in Chapter 6, immediately after the Daily Climatology section
- Workflow 2 — Building a Custom Autoplot Chart is in Chapter 4, at the end of the Autoplot section
- Workflow 3 — Researching a Past Warning Event is in Chapter 7, following the VTEC Browser section
- Workflow 4 — Downloading a Year of Hourly ASOS Data is in Chapter 8, at the end of the download portals chapter
- Workflow 5 — Building a Wind Rose is in Chapter 4, alongside Workflow 2
This chapter steps back and addresses the broader question: once you know how the individual tools work, how do you combine them effectively?
Using the IEM as a Research System
The IEM’s real power emerges when you stop treating its tools as isolated point-and-click applications and start treating them as components of a connected research pipeline. A typical investigation moves through several layers:
Orientation — Start with current conditions or the Daily Feature archive to understand what the IEM is showing you about the present moment or a recent event. The Daily Feature in particular is worth browsing regularly — it demonstrates what the tools can produce and gives you directly re-runnable Autoplot configurations for every chart.
Event identification — Use the VTEC Browser or the NWS warning search to pin down the exact timing, polygon, and metadata for a past event. The ETN gives you a unique handle on the specific warning that you can carry forward into every subsequent query.
Data retrieval — Use the appropriate download tier for what you need. Tier 1 portals for straightforward single-station CSV downloads. Tier 2 CGI endpoints for bulk or multi-parameter pulls. The API for programmatic access. Remember the 1,000 station-year processing limit on the ASOS download portal and plan your queries accordingly.
Quality assessment — Before drawing conclusions, review the data quality caveats relevant to your network. ASOS temperature data carries the whole-degree rounding artifact described in Chapter 2 and Chapter 10. COOP data carries TOBS offsets described in Chapter 6 and Chapter 10. Cross-check your downloaded values against Autoplot charts of the same station and period — discrepancies often surface systemic issues before they contaminate an analysis.
Visualization and verification — Use Autoplot to visualize what you downloaded. The chart library covers nearly every combination of variable, time scale, and network that the IEM supports. If you cannot find a chart that shows what you need, the JSON output format from most CGI endpoints will feed directly into a Python or R visualization pipeline.
A Note on Using These Tools Together
The IEM’s tools were not designed as a unified application — they grew organically over two decades as separate modules addressing specific needs. This means there is no single dashboard that connects everything. The connection happens in your head and in your workflow.
The most effective IEM users develop a personal map of the site: a set of bookmarked Autoplot configurations, a saved set of CGI URL templates, a mental model of which download portal serves which data type. Building that map takes time. The Daily Feature archive, browsed regularly over months, is probably the fastest path to it — every entry is a demonstration of a tool applied to a real problem, with a re-runnable link attached.
