Myth #1

It's raining! The drought map must be wrong, they're just too lazy to update it.

Drought maps reflect accumulated deficit, not today's weather. The map was updated. You just don't understand what it's measuring. The USDM updates every Thursday. When you see Tuesday's rain on Wednesday and say the map is wrong, you are — with great respect — confusing weather with climate. The map isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

Myth #2

We got 2 inches of rain last week. Drought over!

Pennsylvania's normal monthly precipitation is ~89mm. In summer, evapotranspiration removes 150–220mm equivalent per month from the water budget. Two inches (50mm) doesn't break even. October 2024's water budget deficit was −1.65 standard deviations below normal. One rainstorm doesn't move that needle. The PADI index for October was 1.989 — the highest in our 131-year record — and it happened during a month where it did, in fact, rain.

Myth #3

No wonder people don't believe in climate change if scientists can't even tell us if it's a drought.

We can tell you. It is. The water-year SPI is −0.50, 43% of PA monitoring stations are below the drought threshold, and the cumulative precipitation deficit since January 2024 is 90mm. What we cannot do is make the number different because someone saw puddles on their driveway. This is not a communication failure. This is a comprehension opportunity.

A) Correct, rain fixes everything, past and present.

B) Scientists should just wait for a good week and update the map then.

C) No. Historical records do not change retroactively because it rained later. October 2024 is still October 2024. Time is linear. The data is correct.

The drought map hasn't changed after Tuesday's rain. The best explanation is:

A) Scientists are lazy and didn't update it.

B) The map is bullshit.

C) One rainfall event does not resolve a multi-month accumulated deficit measured across 2,484 stations. The map is accurate. It updates weekly. It will show improvement when the data shows improvement, not when you personally feel like it should.

We want to be clear: we are delighted you care about the weather. Genuinely. Weather enthusiasm is good. But there is a meaningful difference between "I observed precipitation" and "I have evaluated 131 years of water balance data across 2,484 monitoring stations and determined that the Standardized Precipitation Index, water budget deficit, and Pennsylvania Arid Drought Index are all incorrect because I saw rain on Tuesday."

The drought is real. The maps are accurate. The scientists are not lazy. Drought and rain coexist all the time — October 2024 had rainfall AND a PADI of 1.989. March 2025 had above-normal rainfall AND was the second-worst drought month in our entire 2024–2025 record (PADI 1.87, 100% coverage).
